December 13
The fifteenth day of Advent is St. Lucia's Day.
Happy St. Lucia's Day!
The Feast of Saint Lucy, also known a St. Lucia's Day, is widely celebrated as the 'festival of light' and commemorates Lucia of Syracuse, on the Italian island of Sicily. Saint Lucy is said to have brought food and aid to Christians hiding in the Roman catacombs and in order to carry the most food, placed a wreath of candles on her head to light her way.
In many countries Saint Lucy is celebrated with a parade of women and men wearing white with red vestments, carrying candles and bringing light during the dark winter months.
This year, in honor of Saint Lucy, we encourage you to make a donation to support the St. Catherine University Food Shelf, which partners with Celeste's Dream (a ministry of the Sisters of St. Joseph). The food shelf serves the students of St. Catherine University and works to lessen food insecurity on campus. To make a donation, either purchase Celeste's Dream Community Garden Cookbook or make a contribution directly to the Food Shelf.
For every dollar donated, the Food Shelf can purchase $5 worth of food to feed our community.
